Bernadette Fournier – A young nun working with Father Boulanger. She is extremely devout, and has been since childhood. Her childhood visions of the Virgin Mary made her somewhat famous in France, and she came to Africa to escape that fame and lead a quiet life. It is said that she can heal with a touch.

Celia O'Sullivan: Married to Peter O'Sullivan. She and her husband are here from America to negotiate a contract with Captain Zanzibar on behalf of a major Massachusetts shipping group. She is a businesswoman easily motivated by profit.

Chaduji bint Sayid Barghash: Chaduji is the Sultan's daughter and favorite child. She has the reputation of being both the most beautiful and demanding of any Princess Zanzibar has ever known. Contrary to Zanzibari tradition, she has played a role in foreign negotiations, entertaining diplomats and on various occasions drawing up contracts and agreements on behalf of her father. It is said that the Sultan approves of her willful, intelligence, but keeps a close eye on her.

Charles Gingell: A crew member on the Georgette, serving as a gunner. Known to be a deadly marksman.

Desmond Gale: Desmond Gale is the first mate of the Georgette. Shortly after graduation from Cambridge, he joined the military and has served overseas in various posts since. He was recently elevated to First Mate by Captain Hamlin after an incidence of violence where Hamlin and Gale were nearly killed. It is said that Gale has a natural talent for engineering and tinkers with inventions when off duty.

Devereux Boulanger : A French Priest here to spread Catholicism. He doesn't seem to be all that successful though, and some suspect that he is not actually all that religious a man. Father Devereux often travels to mainland Africa for long periods of time. It is said he is searching for something.

Emily Ruete: Born Salamah bint Said, she is the Sultan's sister. She secretly married a German and left Zanzibar years ago. She has now returned with her son.

George Smith Anthony: The captain of the Catalpa, the whaling ship sent to rescue the Freemantle 6, currently at port in Zanzibar. A man of piety and principals, and very sympathetic to the Fenian cause. He is determined to get the freed prisoners back to America and avoid violence if he can.

Georgette Harris: Captain Robert Hamlin's fiancé and his ship's namesake. She grew up in a Catholic orphanage in Australia. Always trying to help others, she assisted Father Kincaid with church services and ran a Bible study group at Freemantle prison. She is sweet, extremely giving, and everyone loves her.

James Wilson: James Wilson is one of the escaped Fenians. He was a soldier of the crown who was caught swearing an oath to Irish Independence. As a demolitions expert he was treated with special care in the Freemantle Prison, but soon proved to be a model prisoner. However, he was the one who sent the letter to America begging for aid. Time in prison has taken a considerable toll on his body and he has had a terrible cough since the breakout.

John Breslin: John Breslin is the American civil war veteran from California who carried out the prison break. He took on the role of a wealthy investor, interested in setting up a factory near Freemantle. He kept contact with the Fenians minimal and was their outside world. He is a no nonsense man who can talk a good game, and fight hard to back it up.

Kintu: A haughty African servant and favorite of the Sultan who is responsible for transcribing all foreign inquiries into legal documents for the Sultan's court. It is said that he speaks two dozen languages and cannot be bribed.

Michael Harrington: One of the Freemantle 6, he was imprisoned for 10 years at Freemantle Prison. A former soldier in the British army, he was caught in an act of Irish rebellion. He is a man of honor, and a poet. It is astonishing how he has held onto his gentleness and integrity in spite of the harsh life in prison.

Mister John Davis: A former slave, who escaped before the civil war, Mister John Davis was hired to work on the Catalpa by Captain Anthony. Captain Anthony agreed that Davis' contract would be fulfilled as soon as Davis could charter passage to his African home. It is probable that Davis will stay in Zanzibar and return to Africa no matter what becomes of the Fenians.

Noelle Lambert: An older woman, Sister Noelle has a very severe and pious look to her. She is in charge of maintaining the grounds of the church, including the rather pathetic garden where she tries to grow French roses. Rumor has it that she has a hidden brewery somewhere on the grounds.

Peter O'Sullivan: Married to Celia O'Sullivan. He is here with his wife and in the process of negotiating a shipping contract with Captain Zanzibar. He is an Irishman, and very sympathetic to the Fenian cause.

Robert Hamlin: Robert Hamlin is the Captain of the Georgette, the British ship on a mission to return the Fenian prisoners. His career in the British Navy has been marked with distinction and extreme bravery. He spent some time as the officer in charge of discipline at Freemantle Prison when the Fenian Six arrived. He was discharged from prison duty after a severe disciplining incident. He is a driven career man and it is clear that he is determined to return with the Fenians, dead or alive. He is currently engaged and his steamship is named after his fiancé.

Sayyid Khalifa I bin Said al-Busaid: Khalifa is the Sultan's younger brother. Shortly after assuming his position, the Sultan placed Khalifa in prison fearing that Khalifa would turn against him. After considerable time, the Sultan released him, but it is said that the time in prison changed him. Khalifa has tried to establish his own following and business, but whether he is cursed or being thwarted by the Sultan, all his efforts turn to nothing. Still, he is the Sultan's brother and it is said that he has respect and trust in the court.

Seyyid Bargash bin Said: The Sultan of Zanzibar. He is desperately trying to maintain Zanzibari independence from the British, French, and Germans.

Thomas Darraugh: Thomas Darragh is one of the escaped Fenians. Like the others, he was a soldier of the Crown of England who was caught swearing an oath to Irish Independence. He actually spent many years as a career soldier to the crown, serving meritoriously in India before he was caught up in the Fenian Rebellion plot. When he fled the Freemantle prison, he showed redoubled strength and a powerful longing for freedom. Time in Freemantle did not treat him well and it is obvious to all who see his sunken, wild eyes that the prison haunts him still.

Tipputip: Tipuputip is Captain William Zanzibar Smith's right hand man. A man of action, profit and adventure, Tipputip drew together a considerable independent force that he hired to the highest foreign bidder. Long known as a successful slaver, he now holds a great deal of land and plantations in his and Captain Zanzibar Smith's name. He is the ground leader for Smith's enterprise. His ruthlessness is legendary.

Tom Graves: Tom Graves is a newly arrived journalist from America where he has built up a reputation of being in the right place at the right time. It is unclear what story he came to Zanzibar for, but quite clear that the Fenian's plight has his interest.

He is allowed to keep a large number of mercenaries in town to protect his interests and it is said his ships are all well-armed. He is known as the strangers best friend in Zanzibar, so long as you stay on his good side.
